Luuk Sengers

Luuk Sengers is an independent environmental journalist and investigative journalism trainer.

He started his journalistic career as an economy reporter at, among others, the Dutch national media Quote, Intermediair, Associated Press Services (GPD) and NRC Handelsblad. In 2009, he co-authored the international handbook "Story-Based Inquiry. A Manual for Investigative Journalists" and co-founded Story-Based Inquiry Associates. Since then, he has trained thousands of professionals and students on five continents in investigative skills and contributed to several manuals on investigative journalism. In addition, he has specialised in interview techniques and data journalism.

Luuk also continues to work as a freelance investigative journalist, for the Dutch weekly De Groene Amsterdammer. His stories are about the impact of large companies on the climate and the environment. His investigations are often data driven.

Together with Mark Lee Hunter, Luuk developed the Story-Based Inquiry method for investigative journalists, which is distributed by UNESCO, among others, and widely acclaimed as a benchmark for education in the profession.

Luuk teaches in newsrooms and at universities at home and abroad, including the Thomas More Hogeschool in Mechelen (Belgium) and the Vrije Universiteit in Brussels. He has advised NGOs including Greenpeace, Friends of the Earth and Amnesty International and is a regular speaker at IRE, GIJC, CIJ and Data Harvest conferences, the world's leading forums for best practice in investigative journalism.

He was on the board of the VVOJ, the Dutch-Flemish association of investigative journalists, for ten years.
Luuk graduated in Social and Economic History at the Radboud University Nijmegen.
